Rencontre avec Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou et Aurélien Vernant, autour de l’exposition « New Babylon ». Initié en 1958, New Babylon peut être considérée comme la dernière utopie positive du XXe siècle. Constant aura, pendant près de vingt ans, travaillé à ce projet visionnaire d’ « urbanisme unitaire » plaçant l’art et la création collective au cœur du projet social et politique.Quelle peut être l’actualité de cette vision idéale et totalisante, dans une époque façonnée par la croissance quantitative et l’aplanissement corollaire de toute chose ? Quel serait ce New babylonien à l’heure où s’affirme une humanité générique ? Les œuvres des artistes exposés sont autant d’amorces pour esquisser les contours d’une habitabilité contemporaine de New Babylon.
Meeting with Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou and Aurélien Vernant, around the exhibition « New Babylon ». Initiated in 1958, New Babylon can be considered as the last positive utopia of the 20th century. For nearly twenty years, Constant has worked on this visionary project of « unitary urban planning », placing art and collective creation at the heart of the social and political project. What can be the actuality of this ideal and totalizing vision, in an era shaped by quantitative growth and the consequent flattening of everything? What would this Babylonian Newman be at a time when a generic humanity is asserting itself? The works of the artists on display are a starting point for sketching the contours of a contemporary New Babylon habitability.
